For games, two CPU traits matter most: high per-core clock speed and fast cache. Core count is secondary, most games are happy with 6-8 cores, while clock speed and cache convert directly into frames and a smooth frametime.

A word on X3D. AMD CPUs with this suffix carry extra cache aimed right at games, and in heavy titles the gap over regular models is noticeable, especially on the dips. If the PC is primarily for gaming, the Ryzen 7 9800X3D is the benchmark right now. If the machine leans more toward work and rendering, the premium for X3D isn’t as justified, go with a regular Ryzen 7 or Core i5.

On platform: AMD leads in pure gaming thanks to X3D, Intel is strong on price in the mid-range and in multithreaded work tasks. Both are solid options, so start from your budget and from what will run on the PC besides games.

A common mistake: buying good memory and leaving XMP off. Then a DDR5-6000 stick runs at 4800 or slower, and you lose frames for no reason. Check the memory profile line in the BIOS right after you build the PC.

Storage: SSD only, NVMe is better

This one is simple. A regular hard drive for gaming in 2026 is a no-go: long load times and streaming stutters on open maps. Install games on an SSD, ideally NVMe, and the difference in load speed is obvious to the naked eye. Leave the hard drive for movies and archives.

Where to buy without overpaying

New with a warranty. The upside is obvious: warranty, returns, a receipt. The downside is the price, usually higher than the used market. A tip: don’t buy from the first listing you see, the price of the same part swings noticeably between retailers, so compare before you pay, and a price tracker helps you catch a real drop.

Want to save: the used market. Used hardware is cheaper, sometimes a lot cheaper. CPUs and RAM are nearly safe to buy used, they rarely fail. Be more careful with a GPU: check it before you pay, run a stress test for 15-20 minutes, watch the temperatures and for artifacts, ask about the warranty and whether it was used for mining. A card that ran mining around the clock is best avoided.

Bottom line: if your budget allows and you don’t want to gamble, buy new with a warranty. If you’re saving, the CPU and RAM are safe to buy used, but the GPU only with a proper check.

”What matters more for gaming, the CPU or the GPU?”

It depends on resolution. At 1080p the load usually leans on the CPU: the GPU sits idle while the CPU and memory cap your frames. At 1440p and 4K the load shifts to the GPU. The main rule: keep the CPU and GPU in the same class, don’t pair a top-tier card with a weak CPU. For esports at 1080p aiming for 144+ FPS, the CPU and fast memory matter more than an extra bit of GPU.

”How much RAM should I get, 16 or 32 GB?”

32 GB. Sixteen still works for getting everything to launch, but in heavy open worlds with a browser open in the background you start hitting freezes from running out of memory. 32 GB as two 16 GB sticks is comfortable headroom for the game and all the background apps. Don’t forget to enable XMP or EXPO in the BIOS.

”Is it worth buying a used GPU to save money?”

You can, if you’re willing to check it. Run the card through a stress test at the seller’s, watch the temperatures and for artifacts on screen, ask about the warranty and mining. If checking blind feels scary, the price difference isn’t worth the risk, buy new with a warranty.
