How much FPS optimization adds in Forza 6
See the gain for your hardware. How to get there yourself is in the guide below.
- Source: average across measurements on our clients' PCs over 7 years, not a guarantee
- Depends on: your hardware and how cluttered the system is, weaker PC means a bigger gain
- Network: we cut jitter and extra traffic; physical ping to the server depends on your ISP
- Exact numbers: after a free diagnostic of your PC
Quick: best Forza Horizon 6 settings for 2026. Lower Environment Geometry from Extreme to Ultra/High and shadows to Medium (this frees up the CPU and kills the stutters in the city), turn off ray tracing, and set DLSS/FSR/XeSS upscaling to Quality. Move the game to an NVMe SSD and clear the DX12 shader cache, set the shader cache to 10 GB in the NVIDIA panel, and in Windows disable VBS and enable XMP/EXPO. Typical FPS gain: +25-50% with a steady frametime.
Why Forza Horizon 6 lags even on a powerful PC
Forza Horizon 6 launched on PC on 19 May 2026 on Steam and the Microsoft Store. The game looks great, but like almost any fresh DirectX 12 release, it picks up stutters and FPS drops at launch even on good hardware. It is not always your PC at fault, more often it is the nature of the engine itself and a couple of settings cranked too high.
Where smoothness is lost:
- On-the-fly shader compilation. DirectX 12 builds shaders the moment you first drive into a new area, which is why you get hitches in the first minutes of driving through unfamiliar places. Fixed with a warm-up and the shader cache
- CPU bottleneck. In dense city scenes with traffic and crowds the CPU chokes while the GPU may sit idle. Lowering environment geometry and shadows helps
- Ray tracing eats video memory. On cards with little VRAM, enabling Ray Tracing tanks FPS at speed. Unless you have an RTX 4080 or stronger, it is better to turn it off for actual gameplay (not photo mode)
- A hard drive instead of an SSD. The game officially requires an SSD, on an HDD you get endless pop-in and freezes
- Stock Windows 11. Telemetry, background processes, overlays and the wrong power plan can easily take 10-20% in any game
After tuning everything below, the typical FPS gain is usually 25 to 50%, and more importantly the hitches go away and the frame time becomes even. The exact number depends on your build.
Best Forza Horizon 6 graphics settings
The logic is simple: first remove what loads the CPU and causes stutters, and leave pure cosmetics to taste if you have frames to spare.
| Setting | Recommendation | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Environment Geometry | Ultra / High | The heaviest setting for the CPU. Dropping from Extreme to Ultra or High frees up the CPU by almost 15% and removes hitches in the city |
| Shadow quality | Medium / High | Hits the CPU hard. Lowering it often fixes stutters in dense scenes |
| Ray Tracing | OFF | Eats VRAM and tanks FPS at speed. Keep it only for photo mode or if you have an RTX 4080 or higher |
| Motion Blur | Short | Masks small frame time dips, the image feels smoother |
| Anti-aliasing | TAA / medium | Turning it off completely gives jagged edges at speed. Medium is enough |
| Reflections | Low / medium | Expensive in corners with lots of cars |
| Texture quality | Based on VRAM | 8 GB card: High. 12 GB and up: Ultra. If VRAM overflows, you get stutters |
| Upscaling (DLSS / FSR / XeSS) | Quality | If you are GPU bound at 1440p or 4K, Quality mode gives smoothness with almost no loss of sharpness |
A word on frame rate. A stable 60 FPS with an even frame time feels better than 90 FPS that drops on every flashy corner. If you have a 144 Hz monitor but the game does not hold 144 stably in the benchmark, it is better to cap frames lower (for example at 90 or 120) for the car to stay responsive and even.
How to remove shader compilation stutters
This is the main pain of fresh DX12 games and Forza Horizon 6 is no exception. The hitches on your first drive through new terrain are shader compilation. What to do:
- Move the game to an NVMe SSD. The most noticeable fix: on an HDD stutters are inevitable, the game requires an SSD for a reason
- Clear the DirectX shader cache. In Windows open Disk Cleanup and tick DirectX Shader Cache files, the game will rebuild the cache from scratch with no corrupt entries
- Warm up the shaders: drive through the main areas in free roam, the first hitches will go away and not come back
- Enable Advanced Shader Delivery if you have an AMD card on the RDNA 3 or RDNA 4 architecture, it noticeably reduces compilation stutters
- Update your GPU driver from nvidia.com or amd.com rather than through Windows Update: optimized versions ship for major releases
- Turn off the Discord, GeForce Experience and Steam overlays, they often conflict with DX12 and add hitches
NVIDIA settings for Forza Horizon 6
NVIDIA Control Panel → Manage 3D Settings → Program Settings tab → select the game’s executable.
| Setting | Value | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Power management | Max performance | Stops the GPU from dropping clocks on flat sections |
| Shader cache | 10 GB+ | More room for shaders, less recompilation and fewer hitches |
| Power management mode | Prefer max performance | More stable clocks in long sessions |
| Vertical sync | OFF | Better to cap FPS in-game than to add latency through V-Sync |
| Low Latency / Reflex | ON | Reduces input lag, the steering is more responsive |
| Triple buffering | OFF | Not needed without V-Sync |
AMD Radeon settings
AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition → Gaming tab → Forza Horizon 6 profile.
| Setting | Value | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Advanced Shader Delivery | On (RDNA 3 / RDNA 4) | Reduces shader compilation stutters. New cards only |
| Radeon Anti-Lag 2 | On (latest driver) | Reduces input lag with no risk |
| Radeon Chill | Off | Dynamically drops FPS, unpredictable frame time |
| Radeon Boost | Off | Lowers resolution in motion, blurs the image at speed |
| Power management | Maximum performance | Stable clocks |
| Wait for vertical refresh | Always off | Less latency |
Windows optimization for Forza Horizon 6
This is where the most underrated gains are. Most guides stop at “update your drivers”, but in reality the system takes a noticeable chunk of performance.
| Setting | Where to find it | State | Effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| VBS / Memory Integrity | Windows Security → Core Isolation. Check: Win+R, msinfo32 | OFF | +5-15% FPS |
| Ultimate Performance plan | PowerShell: powercfg -duplicatescheme e9a42b02-d5df-448d-aa00-03f14749eb61 | ON | More stable CPU clocks |
| Game Mode | Settings → Gaming → Game Mode | Test | In FH6 many report that OFF removes frame time hitches. Test both |
| HAGS (hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling) | Settings → Display → Graphics | ON | For RTX 30+ / RX 6000+ |
| XMP / EXPO in BIOS | Del or F2 at boot, enable Profile 1 | ON | +5-15% FPS and a smoother 1% low |
| Game on an NVMe SSD | Move the install to an SSD | Yes | Removes pop-in and some stutters |
| Discord / GeForce Exp overlays | App settings | OFF | Fewer conflicts with DX12 |
| GPU drivers | nvidia.com or amd.com | Update | Release optimization |
Tip: VBS (kernel virtualization) is on by default in Windows 11 and takes 5-15% in games. Check the “Virtualization-based security” line via
msinfo32. If it says “Running”, it is active and eating your FPS.
Can your PC run Forza Horizon 6
The system requirements are officially split into four tiers. The key thing for all of them: Windows 10 or 11 version 22H2 or newer, and an SSD is mandatory.
| Tier | GPU | CPU | RAM |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum (1080p, Low, 60 FPS) | GTX 1650 / RX 6500 XT / Arc A389 | i5-8400 / Ryzen 5 1600 | 16 GB |
| Recommended | RTX 3060 Ti / RX 6700 XT / Arc A580 | i5-12400F / Ryzen 5 5600X | 16 GB |
| High | RTX 4070 Ti / RX 7900 XT | i7-12700K / Ryzen 7 7700X | 16 GB+ |
If your PC is below the minimum or barely manages on low, there are two paths: squeeze the most out of the system and settings (that is the whole guide above) or look into an upgrade. If you are not sure what to change first, ask us in the chat and we will tell you whether the CPU, the GPU or the memory is the bottleneck.
What you can do yourself and what is better to hand off
Every setting in this guide can be done in an evening and gives a tangible gain. But some things take experience and carry risks:
Overclocking RAM by timings can be done wrong, and the system will start crashing to a blue screen 20 minutes into a session. Cleaning up Windows by hand easily turns into a removed component you needed and lost Wi-Fi or sound. BIOS tuning without understanding what you are enabling can wreck stability.
Our packages cover exactly that, remotely and turnkey:
- Classic 11 ($25): a clean Windows 11, drivers, basic BIOS tuning
- CustomX ($30): a custom Windows with the extra stripped out, on top of Classic 11
- GamePro ($60): everything above plus full CPU, GPU and RAM overclocking and stress tests
- Separately: CPU overclocking, GPU overclocking, BIOS tuning
What to expect from optimization
We will add exact measurements for Forza Horizon 6 specifically from our test benches here after a run, so we do not throw out numbers blindly. Based on typical builds and our experience with other DX12 games, the rough guide is:
- lowering environment geometry and shadows: frees up the CPU and removes stutters in the city;
- clearing the shader cache plus NVMe and a warm-up: the first-drive hitches disappear;
- a clean system, XMP, the power plan and drivers: a combined 15 to 30% to the average FPS and a noticeable rise in the 1% low (that is, the dips themselves go away, not just the average number).
Overall, the effect on smoothness often feels even stronger than the average FPS number: the game stops jittering.
Questions from our Discord
”Stutters on an RTX 4070, FPS seems high”
Classic DX12 shader compilation. Move the game to an NVMe SSD, clear the shader cache through Disk Cleanup, raise the shader cache in the NVIDIA panel to 10 GB and drive through the main areas in free roam to warm it up. The first-drive hitches will go away.
”Drops in the city, fine on the highway”
This is a CPU bottleneck. Lower environment geometry from Extreme to Ultra or High and reduce shadows. In dense scenes the CPU will stop choking. If the problem remains, RAM overclocking and a Windows cleanup help, they pull up the 1% low.
”The game barely runs, I have a GTX 1060”
The GTX 1060 is below the minimum (the minimum is the GTX 1650). You can play on low at 1080p, but do not expect miracles. Squeeze the most out of the system per the guide, and if you want stable frames it is worth thinking about a GPU upgrade. Ask us in the chat and we will suggest an upgrade to fit your budget.
”After a clean Windows reinstall the Wi-Fi disappeared”
Custom builds and images often have the Wi-Fi drivers stripped out. Download the right driver on your phone, move it over by USB, or connect by cable for the first setup. In our CustomX we install the drivers remotely and verify that everything came up.
